(LEAD) Moon's special envoy says he will discuss denuclearization with N. Korea

SEOUL -- The special envoy of South Korean President Moon Jae-in to North Korea plans to discuss ways to completely denuclearize the Korean Peninsula when he visits the communist state this week, the envoy said Tuesday.

"The special delegation also plans to hold discussions on ways to completely denuclearize (the peninsula) and establish lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula," Chung Eui-yong told a press briefing, one day before he was set to embark on a one-day trip to Pyongyang.

(LEAD) Moon holds security meeting on eve of trip by special envoy to N. Korea

SEOUL -- President Moon Jae-in held a special meeting with security-related officials Tuesday, one day before his top security adviser was set to embark on a trip to North Korea.

The meeting, held at the presidential office Cheong Wa Dae, began at 4 p.m. and also involved Moon's national security adviser, Chung Eui-yong, who will visit Pyongyang on Wednesday as a special envoy of the president.

N. Korean leader absent from public view for 15 days

SEOUL -- North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has not been seen in public for half a month following his intensive inspections of economic sites this summer, North Korea watchers in Seoul said Tuesday.

According to Pyongyang's media, Kim had visited 30 economic sites between late June and late August, prodding government and party officials to help speed up a state drive for economic development.

(2nd LD) Gas leak at Samsung chip factory leaves 1 dead, two unconscious

YONGIN, South Korea -- One worker was killed and two others remain unconscious after being exposed to carbon dioxide in a Samsung Electronics Co. semiconductor factory southeast of Seoul, authorities said Tuesday.

They were found lying unconscious at around 2 p.m. in a firefighting facility filled with dense carbon dioxide in the basement of a production line in Giheung, Gyeonggi Province, according to local police and firefighters.

(LEAD) Samsung Engineering wins US$3 bln plant order in UAE

SEOUL -- Samsung Engineering Co., a construction unit of Samsung Group, said Tuesday it has received plant orders worth US$3.07 billion in the United Arab Emirates.

Abu Dhabi Oil Refining Company, an affiliate of UAE's state-run oil firm Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), has placed two separate orders to Samsung Engineering in lump-sum turnkey contracts, the company said in regulatory filings. The deal calls for the South Korean builder to be in charge of engineering, procurement and construction.

(LEAD) Seoul stocks close higher on tech, bio gains

SEOUL -- South Korean stocks closed higher Tuesday, led by gains in large-cap tech and bio shares, analysts said. The Korean won fell against the U.S. dollar.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) rose 8.69 points, or 0.38 percent, to close at 2,315.72. Trade volume was light at 266 million shares worth 4.3 trillion won (US$3.86 billion), with winners outnumbering losers 445 to 357.
