S. Korea welcomes joint investigation effort of Saudi Arabia, Turkey over journalist's disappearance
SEOUL, Oct 18 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's foreign ministry said Thursday it welcomes Saudi Arabia and Turkey's decision to form a joint probe team to investigate the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
The ministry issued a commentary stating that South Korea welcomes the joint effort by Saudi Arabia and Turkey to transparently solve the case. It added that Seoul expects to see fair and trustworthy investigation results.
This was the first commentary released by the South Korean government regarding the Khashoggi case.
Khashoggi, a Saudi dissident and a columnist for the Washington Post, vanished after going into the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on Oct. 2, creating suspicions that he might have been murdered by a team of Saudi agents.
Saudi King Salman and Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan recently agreed to hold a joint investigation after the two discussed the case over the phone.
