Nexen Heroes complete rare triple play in postseason
By Yoo Jee-ho
SEOUL, Oct. 22 (Yonhap) -- The Nexen Heroes completed a rare triple play in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) postseason on Monday.
The Heroes got three outs in one play in the top of the second inning against the Hanwha Eagles in Game 3 of their first round series at Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul.
The Heroes were trailing 2-0 after the Eagles got three consecutive singles off starter Jake Brigham.
With men at first and second and nobody out, the Eagles had a chance to break the game wide open.
But No. 8 hitter Kim Hea-sung hit a grounder down the third base line, and third baseman Kim Min-sung started only the third triple play in KBO postseason history.
He fielded the ball and quickly stepped on the bag for the force out, and threw to second for the second out. Then second baseman Song Sung-mun fired a strike to first baseman Park Byung-ho for the trifecta.
The first postseason triple play came during the first round in 2003, when the SK Wyverns turned three against the Samsung Lions. With runners at the corners, Kim Han-soo struck out at the plate, and the two men aboard got caught in rundowns.
In Game 7 of the 2004 Korean Series, the Lions were once again victimized by the triple play, this time against the now-defunct Hyundai Unicorns.
The Lions had runners at first and second when Yang Joon-hyuk lined out to first base and both runners got out.
