SEOUL -- North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has inspected a test of a newly developed high-tech weapon, the North's state media reported Friday.

The Korean Central Broadcasting Station said that Kim visited a testing site at a national defense institute and inspected the test of the unspecified new tactical weapon.

(LEAD) U.N. panel adopts resolution condemning N.K. human rights abuses

SEOUL/NEW YORK -- A United Nations committee on Thursday adopted a resolution calling for accountability for gross human rights violations in North Korea.

The U.N. Third Committee, which oversees humanitarian issues, passed the document by consensus without a vote.

N.K. leader orders distribution of S. Korean tangerines to students, workers

SEOUL -- North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has instructed the tangerines that South Korea recently sent as a gift be distributed to students and workers in Pyongyang, the country's state media said Friday.

On Sunday, South Korean President Moon Jae-in sent 200 tons of tangerines of the country's southern island of Jeju to North Korea in return for the mushrooms that Kim sent as a gift in September.

(LEAD) Koreas hold meeting on aviation cooperation

SEOUL -- South and North Korea held a meeting Friday to discuss cooperation in the aviation sector, including the possible opening of a direct air route between the countries.

The meeting started at around 10 a.m. at the joint liaison office in the North's border town of Kaesong, according to the unification ministry. North Korea is said to have requested the meeting.

S. Korea, UAE launch high-level dialogue channel on nuclear cooperation

SEOUL -- South Korea and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) launched a high-level dialogue channel on nuclear cooperation on Friday, in another sign of their expanding partnership.

The two countries held the inaugural session of the High-Level Consultation in Seoul, led by Seoul's Vice Foreign Minister, Lee Tae-ho, and Suhail Mohamed Faraj Al Mazrouei, the UAE minister of energy and industry.

S. Korean Navy's first training ship to be launched Friday

SEOUL -- The first training ship of South Korea's Navy is set to be launched on Friday afternoon.

The ceremony for the ATH-81 Hansando vessel, which will be deployed in early 2021, will take place at the shipyard of Hyundai Heavy Industries in the southeastern city of Ulsan, the Navy said. ATH is the acronym of Auxiliary Training Ship Helo.

(Yonhap Feature) Floating solar farm in spotlight as S. Korea goes green

GUNSAN -- A reservoir on the south bank of the Geum River has stayed idle except when it stores heavy rain to prevent flooding in the nearby industrial complex in Gunsan, a southwestern port city.

The coastal reservoir has recently found a new role: The nation's largest floating solar farm was built on the surface of the water, covering a space the size of three football pitches.
