(런던, 영국 2016년 1월 26일 PRNewswire=연합뉴스) 건강관리 전문 기업 BTG plc(LSE: BTG)가 한국에서 자사 TheraSphere(R)로 치료 받은 첫 환자가 탄생했다고 오늘 발표했다. TheraSphere(R)는 종양세포에 강력한 방사선을 적용하고, 방사선에 대한 건강한 조직의 노출을 최대한 줄이는 원발성 간암 및 전이성 대장암 치료제다.

한국 서울 소재 고대안암병원 영상의학과 김윤환 교수는 “한국에서 간암은 사망률이 높은 질병”이라며 “매년 1만5천 명이 넘는 간암 환자가 발생하는데, 특히 60대와 70대 남성에서 발병률이 높다. 한국의 현재와 미래의 간암 환자들에게 이 치료제를 적용할 수 있게 된 것은 매우 반가운 소식”이라고 말했다.

TheraSphere(R)는 방사성 이트륨-90을 함유한 수백만 개의 유리 마이크로스피어로 구성된 표적 치료제다. 이 유리 마이크로스피어의 직경은 약 20-30마이크로미터(사람 모발 두께의 약 3분의 1)에 불과하다. 시술 방법은 카테터를 이용해서 간동맥을 통해 간 종양에 직접 유리 마이크로스피어를 삽입하는 방식이다. 혈관을 통해 간 종양으로 들어간 유리 마이크로스피어는 간 종양 내에서 영구적으로 자리잡게 된다. 이는 간 종양에 직접 치료제를 투입하는 방식이기 때문에, 주변의 일반 간 조직에 방사선이 미치는 영향력을 최소화하면서 종양 세포를 파괴할 수 있다. 방사성 마이크로스피어는 치료 후 수 주에 걸쳐 지속적으로 종양에 방사선을 조사한다. 이들 환자에서 발병된 조직을 외과적으로 제거하거나 이식을 할 때 TheraSphere(R)를 브리지로 사용할 수도 있다.

한국에서 TheraSphere(R)는 간세포성 암종(hepatocellular carcinoma, HCC) 또는 원발성 간암을 비롯해 다른 부위에서 발생해서 간으로 퍼진 전이성 간암까지 포함하는 간종양 치료제로 승인을 받았다. 한국에서 BL&H에 의해 유통되는 TheraSphere(R)는 홍콩과 싱가포르에서도 판매 중이다. 지금까지 전 세계적으로 2만 명이 넘는 환자들이 TheraSphere(R) 치료를 받았다.

한국 병원들은 원발성 및 전이성 간암에서 TheraSphere(R)의 효능을 평가하는 국제 임상 연구에 환자를 등록하기 시작했다.

First Patients in South Korea Receive TheraSphere(R) Radioembolisation Treatment

LONDON, UK, January 26, 2016/PRNewswire/ -- BTG plc (LSE: BTG), the specialist healthcare company, today announced the first treatment of patients in South Korea with TheraSphere(R) - a treatment for primary liver cancer and metastatic colorectal cancer that delivers powerful radiation to tumour cells and minimises the exposure to healthy tissue.

Professor Joseph Yun Hwan Kim, Department of Radiology, Korea University Anam Hospital, Seoul, South Korea, said: "Liver cancer has a high mortality rate in Korea and the disease affects more than 15,000 people each year, especially older men in their 60s and 70s. It is fantastic news that this therapy is now available to physicians to help us treat certain patients who currently live with this condition in South Korea and may develop it in the future."

TheraSphere(R) is a targeted therapy that consists of millions of glass microspheres containing radioactive yttrium-90. The microspheres are about 20-30 micrometers in diameter - about a third of the width of a human hair. They are delivered directly to liver tumours through the hepatic artery via catheter. The glass microspheres flow directly into the liver tumour through its blood vessels and become permanently lodged there. Because the procedure delivers the treatment directly to the liver tumour, the radiation destroys the tumour cells with minimal impact to the surrounding normal liver tissue. The radioactive microspheres continue to deliver radiation to the tumour over the course of several weeks after treatment. TheraSphere(R) can also be used as a bridge to surgical removal of diseased tissue or transplantation in these patients.
