(로잔, 스위스 2016년 7월 30일 PRNewswire=연합뉴스) 2016 리우데자네이루 올림픽을 위해 브라질로 출발하는 건 비단 사람 선수들만이 아니다. 올림픽 출전 말 중 첫 번째 그룹이 데오도루의 올림픽 승마센터에 방금 도착했다. 런던(영국)에서 출발해 약 12시간의 비행을 마치고, 자정이 가까운 시각에 리우데자네이루 갈레앙 국제공항에 착륙한 것이다.

종합 마술에 출전하는 34마리의 말은 특별 설계된 화물 수송기 Emirates Boeing SkyCargo 777-F로 수송됐다. 그것도 비즈니스 클래스로 말이다. 사람 선수와 마찬가지로 말도 런던 스탠스테드 공항에서 여권 심사(그리고 건강 검사)를 마친 후에야 수하물 및 체크인 가방과 함께 탑승할 수 있었다.

말 버전의 비행 양말(다리 붕대) 외에도 비즈니스 클래스 서비스가 제공됐다. 승무원(실제로는 마부)이 특별 식사와 더불어 카트로 사과나 당근을 섞은 물(탄산은 첨가되지 않았다)도 제공했다.

귀중한 수하물인 말이 최상의 상태로 착륙할 수 있도록 수의사들도 함께 탑승했다. 시합에 출전하는 말의 컨디션도 매우 중요하기 때문이다.

새벽 일찍 리우데자네이루에 도착한 말들은 특별 제작된 트럭을 타고 경찰 호위를 받으며 올림픽 승마센터 내에 건설된 새로운 승마 거처로 수송됐다. 그 과정은 리우 그리스도상이 내려다보고 있었다. 도착지에는 말을 위한 레드 카펫인 검정 고무 매트도 준비돼 있었다.

이와 같은 말 수송은 올림픽 기간에 9차례 있을 예정이다. 영국, 아일랜드, 캐나다, 호주, 뉴질랜드, 짐바브웨, 브라질, 일본, 이탈리아 및 중국의 국가대표 말들이 차례로 수송될 예정이다. 앞으로 2~3주 동안 43개국을 대표하는 200마리 이상의 말들이 데오도루에 도착해, 올림픽 승마 세 종목에서 사람 파트너와 함께 금메달을 향한 질주를 할 예정이다.

Let the Games begin! First Olympic horses arrive in Rio de Janeiro!

LAUSANNE, Switzerland, July 30, 2016/PRNewswire/ -- It's not just the human athletes that are flying into Brazil for Rio 2016. The first Olympic horses have now arrived at the Olympic Equestrian Centre in Deodoro, touching down at Rio de Janeiro Galeao International Airport just before midnight after a near-12 hour flight from London (GBR).

The 34 Eventing horses may have been on a cargo plane, but it was a specially designed Emirates Boeing SkyCargo 777-F, and they all flew business class! Just like the human athletes, they had to go through passport control (and a health check) at London Stansted Airport before boarding with their carry-on luggage and check-in bags.

Sporting the equine equivalent of flight socks (leg bandages), they received the full business class treatment, with special meals delivered by flight attendants (actually grooms), a drinks trolley (buckets) offering water (not fizzy) with a choice of mixers. Apple or carrot sir?

Vets are also on board to ensure the precious equine cargo arrived in tip-top form. Which is important, as these four-legged athletes mean business!

Welcomed into Rio in the early hours of the morning, the horses were driven in specially kitted out trucks, complete with a full police escort, under the watchful eye of Christ the Redeemer en route to the new-build equine accommodation at the Olympic Equestrian Centre, where they rolled out the equine equivalent of a red carpet - black rubber matting!

This in-bound flight, the first of nine during the Olympic period, transported horses from Great Britain, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Zimbabwe, Brazil, Japan, Italy and China. And over the next couple of weeks, more than 200 horses from 43 nations will be arriving in Deodoro, ready to put in their bid for gold with their human partners in the three Olympic equestrian disciplines.
