Former Prime Minister Kim may get Mugunghwa medal posthumously
SEOUL, June 24 (Yonhap) -- Former Prime Minister Kim Jong-pil, who died Saturday, is expected to receive the Mugunghwa medal, the country's highest order of civil merit, a senior government official said.
Kim Jong-pil, one of South Korea's most influential politicians in the 1980s and '90s, died of old age. He was 92.
"I understand that the government will decide to confer the Order of Civil Merit of Mugunghwa (on Kim)," Interior and Safety Minister Kim Boo-kyum told reporters Sunday after visiting Kim's memorial altar set up at Asan Medical Center.
A funeral service is set to take place at 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Kim's associates said. It will be a family funeral, not a national event, in line with the former prime minister's wish, they added.
Kim will be laid to rest in his family tomb in Buyeo, 195 kilometers south of Seoul. His late wife, Park Young-ok, is also laid there.
